New York adds $30 on top of the standard renewal fee for a REAL ID-compliant license. REAL ID has been required for domestic flights since May 7, 2025 — but only if you don't have a US passport or another federal-compliant ID. If you fly rarely and have a passport, you can skip the upgrade.

Enhanced Driver's License in New York

New York is one of five states (with MI, MN, NY, VT, WA) that issues an Enhanced Driver's License (EDL). It costs $30 on top of the standard fee, is REAL ID-compliant, AND is accepted as a border-crossing document for Canada and Mexico via land or sea (not air — air still needs a passport). Worth it if you regularly drive across either border.
